It is believed that the first Mass said in Custer was in 1877. Soon after, Sacred Heart Church was established. The church building endured fires and moves. The Church family experienced tremendous growth. Finally the present church was dedicated in December, 1958 under the name of St. John the Baptist. In 1994, our parish was joined with St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hill City. Then in July 2000 these two parishes joined with St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs and St. James the Apostle Church in Edgemont to form what is now known as Black Hills Catholic Ministries. In 2004 St. Rose administration was taken over by Blessed Sacrament in Rapid City.

Together we have found that each of us is a vital part of our faith family. As part of our faith family we look forward to your participation in the Councils, committees, organizations and activities of our parish.
